  51. Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 gives most Microsoft Windows applications
  52. the same font scaling technology as the HP LaserJet III printer family.
  53. Without leaving your application, you get type that looks as good on-screen as
  54. it does when it comes off your printer without using valuable disk space to
  55. store bitmapped screen fonts.

  69. includes scalable typeface collections on cartridge or disk and more than
  70. twenty individual scalable typefaces.

  95. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  99. NOTE: Before proceeding with the installation instructions below, you must
  100.       prepare the Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 disks according to the
  101.       instructions in the file README.1ST on this disk.
  102.  
  103.  
  104. To install Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0:
  105.  
  106. 1.  Make sure Windows 3.0 is installed and runs in Standard or Enhanced mode.
  107.     Check which mode Windows 3.0 is running by choosing Help from the
  108.     Program Manager Window and then choose About.
  109. 2.  Select the HP LaserJet III or IIID printer driver through the Windows 3.0
  110.     Control Panel.
  111. 3.  Exit Windows 3.0 completely and return to a DOS prompt (do not use the DOS
  112.     icon).
  113. 4.  Insert Disk 1 of Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 Version 1.0 in
  114.     your floppy drive.
  115. 5.  From the DOS prompt of your floppy disk drive, type "IFWSETUP" and press
  116.     [ENTER].
  117.  
  118.       Example:

  122. 6.  Follow the instructions that appear on the screens to complete
  123.     installation.
  124.  
  125.     Hint for selecting the directory for your Typeface Files and Intellifont
  126.     Summary Files:
  127.  
  128.     Input the directory where you have previously installed scalable
  129.     typefaces.  The installation program recognizes scalable typefaces.
  130.  
  131.     Scalable typefaces could have been installed through Type Director or
  132.     AutoFont.  Typefaces installed through Type Director, scalable soft
  133.     fonts installed through AutoFont, and screen fonts installed through
  134.     AutoFont are placed in the \td\type directory of the destination drive.
  135.  
  136.     If you specify a directory, (i.e. \td\type) where typefaces have already
  137.     been installed, as the directory for placing your Intellifont support
  138.     files, the Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 installation
  139.     program will recognize the typefaces and will install them for use as
  140.     scalable screen fonts.
  141.

  143. An instruction guide called IFWGUIDE.WRI in Microsoft Write format will be
  144. placed in your Windows 3.0 directory for viewing and printing.
  145.  
  146. When running Windows 3.0, look for the Intellifont Icon in the Accessories
  147. Group to verify installation.  If you have additional fonts to install, double
  148. click on the Intellifont icon and click on the Fonts button to open the HP Font
  149. Installer window.

  151. In the Hewlett-Packard Font Installer notice the typefaces listed in the left
  152. hand box.  If the typeface has a small dot in front of it, it has been installed
  153. for scalable screen fonts.

  155. To create printer fonts to match your scalable screen fonts, see the 
  156. section "FEATURES OF HEWLETT-PACKARD INTELLIFONT-FOR-WINDOWS 3.0 - New

  178. you need to run Windows 3.0 and setup the HP LaserJet III printer driver before
  179. installing Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0.  The following procedure 
  180. installs the HP LaserJet III printer driver and updates the win.ini file with 
  181. information needed by the driver and by the Hewlett-Packard 
  182. Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 installation program.

  185. 1.  Choose Control Panel from the Main Group in Program Manager.
  186.     The Control Panel window appears.
  187. 2.  Choose the Printers icon from the Control Panel window.
  188.     The Printers dialog box appears.
  189.  
  190.     If you have already installed the HP LaserJet III printer driver, highlight
  191.     the corresponding line from the Installed Printers dialog box and continue
  192.     at #8.
  193.  
  194. 3.  Choose the Add Printer button.
  195. 4.  From the List of Printers dialog box, select the HP LaserJet III printer.
  196. 5.  Choose install.
  197. 6.  Insert the Windows 3.0 Setup Disk 5 and press [Enter].
  198. 7.  Highlight the "HP LaserJet III on None, Inactive" line in the Installed
  199.     Printers dialog box.
  200. 8.  Choose Configure.
  201. 9.  Highlight the correct printer port from the Ports list box.
  202. 10. Choose Setup.
  203. 11. Make any necessary changes in the Printer Setup screen to reflect your
  204.     printer's configuration.
  205. 12. Choose OK twice.
  206. 13. Choose Active.
  207. 14. Choose OK.

  220. Intellifont Integration - Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 includes 
  221. the Intellifont font scaling technology resident in the Hewlett-Packard 
  222. LaserJet III printer family.  Intellifont scales screen fonts to all point sizes 
  223. supported by Windows 3.0.  Screen fonts are created "on-the-fly" -- which means 
  224. enhanced performance and no need to use valuable disk space for bitmapped screen 
  225. fonts.

  227. Scalable Screen Font Files - CG Times and Univers screen fonts are
  228. included to match the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III and IIID printers' internal
  229. scalable typefaces.
  230.  
  231. New Hewlett-Packard Font Installer - Scalable typefaces and bitmapped fonts
  232. can now be installed for use in both Windows 3.0 and your Hewlett-Packard
  233. LaserJet III or IIID printer.  The Hewlett-Packard font installer installs
  234. typefaces and fonts from the following file types:
  235.  
  236. .FF      AGFA Compugraphic FAIS file format.  These files are usually on
  237.       diskette and are shipped with all Hewlett-Packard scalable font
  238.       products.  The .FF file provides support for scalable printer fonts
  239.       and scalable screen fonts.
  240.  
  241. .TYP      AGFA Compugraphic library file format.  These files are placed in the
  242.       \TD\TYPE directory when you install a typeface through Type Director,
  243.       when you install a scalable soft font through HP's AutoFont, and when
  244.       you install a scalable cartridge with screen fonts through HP's
  245.       AutoFont.  The .TYP file provides support for scalable printer fonts
  246.       and scalable screen fonts.
  247.  
  248. .PCM      Printer Cartridge Metrics file.  This file is created by the cartridge
  249.       vendor.  PCM files are used for scalable and bitmapped cartridges that
  250.       are not supported by the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III printer driver.
  251.       The PCM file only provides support for printer fonts.  For scalable
  252.       cartridges the scalable screen fonts must be installed from a .FF
  253.       file or a .TYP file.
  254.  
  255. GLUE.TXT  This file contains information for all products you install
  256.       with AutoFont Support.  Soft fonts and cartridges, bitmapped or
  257.       scalable can be installed from the "glue.txt" file.
  258.  
  259.       When prompted by the HP Font Installer for the drive\directory from
  260.           where you want to add fonts, input the drive\directory where your
  261.       "glue.txt" file is located (default directory for HP's AutoFont
  262.           program and for Type Director is C:\AUTOFONT).  The HP Font Installer
  263.           reads the "glue.txt" file and displays a list of the typefaces that
  264.       have been installed with AutoFont support.  When you add typeface(s),
  265.           the HP Font Installer creates a .PFM file for soft fonts and a .PCM
  266.           file for cartridge fonts from the AutoFont .TFM files.  The HP Font
  267.           Installer installs the .PFM and .PCM files into Windows 3.0 for
  268.           access by the printer driver.
  269.  
  270.       The GLUE.TXT file only provides support for printer fonts.  For
  271.       scalable soft fonts and cartridges the scalable screen fonts must
  272.       be installed from a .FF file or a .TYP file.

  274. .sfp      Bitmapped soft font in portrait orientation.  Intellifont screen fonts
  275.       are only available for bitmapped fonts that were created from an AGFA
  276.       Compugraphic library file (.TYP).  Windows 3.0 will attempt to display
  277.       a rough representation of other bitmapped fonts.

  279. .sfl      Bitmapped soft font in landscape orientation.  Intellifont screen
  280.       fonts are only available for bitmapped fonts that were created from
  281.       an AGFA Compugraphic library file (.TYP).  Windows 3.0 will attempt
  282.       to display a rough representation of other bitmapped fonts.

  284. AutoFont Support - AutoFont support incorporated into the Hewlett-Packard font
  285. installer allows the installation of scalable typeface cartridges, scalable
  286. soft fonts, bitmapped font AutoFont and bitmapped soft fonts into Windows 3.0
  287. without first acquiring a Windows 3.0 metric file.  AutoFont support works by
  288. creating the Windows 3.0 metrics files from the .TFM files installed through
  289. AutoFont.

  293. HPPCL5A PRINTER DRIVER ENHANCEMENTS

  297. Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 version 1.0 includes version 3.7 of 
  298. the HPPCL5A printer driver for the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III and IIID printers.

  300. Enhancements include:

  302.      * Print Model Improvement
  303.      * New and Improved Gray Scale Printing
  304.      * Font Downloading Optimizations
  305.  
  306. Print Model Improvement - The print model feature has been improved to include 
  307. printing patterned or shaded text and graphic images on all images
  308. instead of only on black rectangles.  If your application takes advantage of 
  309. the print model feature, you can print patterned or shaded text or graphic
  310. images on any other patterned or shaded text or graphic image.
  311.  
  312. New and Improved Gray Scale Printing - The gray scale option has been expanded
  313. to include optimal printing of scanned images.  There are three choices in the
  314. Gray Scale dialog box in the Printer Setup screen for printing gray scale
  315. graphics:  Photographic Images, Line Art Images, and HP ScanJet Images.
  316.  
  317.      Photographic Images replaces the Gray Scale Graphics On selection
  318.      supported in Version 3.61 of the HPPCL5A driver.  This method uses
  319.      an 8 bit by 8 bit super pixel to emulate 60 levels of gray.  This
  320.      is up from 32 levels of gray supported in the previous version of
  321.      the driver.  For improved photographic appearance, select
  322.      Photographic Images.  Your images will have smooth, soft looking
  323.      contrasts between shades of gray.  Images originally designed with
  324.      color will print better also.
  325.  
  326.      Line Art Images replaces the Gray Scale Graphics Off selection
  327.      supported in Version 3.61 of the HPPCL5A driver.  This method uses
  328.      patterns to emulate 32 levels of gray.  It has been improved from
  329.      the previous version of the driver by supporting 32 new hand-tuned
  330.      patterned images.  The benefits of this method is that is has fewer
  331.      artifacts and a better balance of gray tones than the old method,
  332.      yet all of the detail is preserved.  Use this method for images
  333.      that have a "line draw" look such as clip art.
  334.  
  335.      HP ScanJet Images is a new option for printing gray scale
  336.      graphics.  This method uses a variation of the 8 bit by 8 bit
  337.      super pixel used in the Photographic Images method.  The HP
  338.      ScanJet Images option is specially tuned for scanned images
  339.      from an HP ScanJet to give exceptional quality and clarity to
  340.      the printed images.
  341.  
  342.      You may want to print your graphic images from more than one of
  343.      the Gray Scale printing methods.  Only you can decide which method
  344.      creates the best output for your picture.

  346. Font Downloading Optimizations - The HPPCL5A printer driver now downloads
  347. individual characters of a symbol set to the printer as they are referenced,
  348. rather than sending the entire symbol set at one time.
